A Brief About Kazi Kalu Pande
Kazi Kalu Pande, whose real name was Vamshidhar Pande, was born in Gorkha District in 1713 AD. He was the son of Kazi Bhimraj Pande and a key figure in Nepal’s history. As a prominent politician and military commander, Kalu Pande played a vital role in the unification of Nepal under King Prithvi Narayan Shah.
He led the Gorkhali forces during the kingdom's expansion campaigns. Unfortunately, Kalu Pande lost his life in 1757 AD during the first battle of Kirtipur, fought as part of the campaign to annex the Kathmandu Valley.
In honor of their victory, Gorkha soldiers constructed a small Manakamana Temple near the site. Today, Kalu Pande Park is home to a stone memorial (samadhi) that pays tribute to this legendary warrior, serving as a lasting reminder of his contributions to Nepal's unification.
